From Broken Hill to Pernambuco via Catapult Ship
This article uses the example of a philatelic cover from 1935 to show the development of the postal system from Africa to Europe to South America. Airlines mentioned include Imperial Airlines and Deutsche Lufthansa.
The Crash at Jeshwang Gambia in 1937 - Additional Indicia & Labels
On March 15, 1937 the Deutsche Lufthansa mail plane D- ALIX Rostock crashed at Jeshwang, Gambia. The crew of four perished. Between 20 and 50 mailbags were recovered by German and British teams, with the salvaged contents forwarded to the intended South American recipients. Postal Historians have extensively documented the philatelic aspects of the salvaged envelopes. This paper reports on some recent extensions to the known indicia and labels and some iconographic aspects of the crash mail.
The Hong Kong - New Hebrides Paquebot – Some Additional Notes
A Paquebot is literally a mailboat. But the philatelic usage of the term (generally capitalized) refers to an envelope - or cover - that has been posted on board a ship and been cancelled with a mark indicating that it has been posted at sea. Some Paquebot marks also indicate the name of the ship that carried the mail. This article describes the postal history of a series of Paquebots from Hong Kong to New Hebrides in 1936.
The Bathurst Connection: The Centrality of Gambia to the Development of Transatlantic Air Mail
This paper explores the development of the Deutsche Lufthansa South American Airmail Service during 1933-1939. Using original source documents from the Lufthansa archives and postal history artifacts in the author's possession, we examine route development, competition and cooperation with the French service, methods of multimodal transportation, equipment evolution and the overall pursuit of postal expedience. Particular emphasis is placed upon the contract negotiations among German and British authorities; Colonial authorities in Bathurst, Gambia; and the German and UK post offices.
The Voyage of the SS Teneriffe - A Nineteenth Century Magical Mystery Tour
This paper utilizes two post cards mailed in 1893 to explore the route taken by the S.S. Teneriffe from Liverpool to West Africa and back. Teneriffe was a ship of the Elder Dempster shipping lines, who played a major role in the development of the UK's West African trade in the nineteenth century. Identifying precise routes, even relying upon contemporary newspaper reports and other primary sources, can be very challenging. Healthy portions of sleuthing and speculation produced only partially conclusive results.
Mastering Postal History: Where is that Postal History Book I Really Need?
I have been looking for a particular kind of postal history book for many years. Not a book about the postal history of a place or time. Rather, a book that helps me to read and interpret a cover. A book that explains how to do the philatelic research necessary to facilitate a greater understand of my covers. And a book that provides a context for postal history within the broader sphere of world history and, indeed, of the social sciences more broadly. In essence, I wanted to add more tools to my postal history tool kit. Really, I wanted to learn how to DO postal history. I suppose I've been looking for a postal history handbook. Since I've been unable to find that book, I've decided to write it myself.

Mastering Postal History 12 - Introduction to the Seaposts
My previous column on the Seaposts dealt with determining ship routes around the world. In this column, I focus on the mail policies, practices and procedures that postal authorities and ship operators established to move the mails across oceans. I also explore the important role of the Universal Postal Union, Topics also include - Early ship letters- Packet ship mail- Sea Post Offices- Paquebots- Ocean Letters- Catapult mail
Mastering Postal History 13 - International Trade and Postal Communications Part
A newly-prosperous middle class was beginning to emerge at the dawn of the Age of Exploration. Mercantile political and economic theories notwithstanding, it was the importation of goods, rather than exports, that was important. The Age of Exploration was not about military or imperial expansionism. It was about trade. The great trading companies of this period were granted monopolies by European monarchs and roamed the seas to Africa and Asia. These firms had fleets of privately-owned ships. The trading companies’ representatives, the ship officers, and crew all relied upon the mail for communications back to the home countries. This paper views the birth of international trade through the lens of postal history.
My latest column in Kelleher’s Stamp Collector's Quarterly is available for free download at www.academia.edu/39074897 - Packet ship mail- Sea Post Offices- Paquebots- Ocean Letters- Catapult mail
Mastering Postal History 14 - International Trade and Postal Communications Part II
In Part I of this paper, I focused on the contribution that the great trading companies made to the development of the West at the beginning of the Age of Exploration. In this second part, I investigate the non-merchants that plied the oceans as common carriers to smaller traders and others without their own dedicated fleets. Emerging domestic prosperity created popular demand for exotic imported goods. It was commerce – and not imperialism – that initiated the growing western hegemony. The entrepreneurial trading companies and the independent cargo shipping companies each made unique contributions to this expansion. This paper continues to study the birth of international trade through the lens of postal history.
